Moving Day Checklist: How To Be Prepared

Moving is often an exciting chapter in people’s lives but when it comes to moving day itself, things can easily become incredibly stressful. So, with that in mind, we’ve created a list of some of the most useful moving tips for you to use next time you’re on the move.

Start Organising Early

You should know about your upcoming at least a month or so in advance, because as anyone who’s ever moved before will tell you, planning ahead always simplifies the whole process. To avoid last minute stress and ensure you’re not too overwhelmed, you should start arranging everything a few weeks beforehand. Don’t forget to organise taking time off work and bond cleaners if necessary, as well as transferring of utilities to the new address early on in this process so there’s no issues on moving day. You should also confirm everything a few days before the big move.

Arrange Moving Equipment

One of the most important things to do before the big move is to stock up on moving supplies. So, start by creating an inventory style laundry list of everything that you’re going to need for the big day. Not only will this ensure you are ready and organised, but it can help you keep track of the packing process. It may also some in handy when estimating the associated transport and moving costs.

Then once everything is at the new property, you can check off each box and item as you unpack after the move. Even if you don’t end up using everything, you can often still find a use for most things when you’re unpacking and storing unused items. You should also consider buying, renting, or borrowing any tools or larger moving equipment to make things easier for you during the move.

Packing Everything Up

Start by packing all the off-season or unused items first and work methodically by packing the less used rooms first, one room at a time. That way, by the time you start packing everything else, you’ll have already made a dent in the workload, and you can utilise the extra space to store boxes out of the way.

When you’re packing everything else, try to combine common items together in the same boxes, before writing descriptions on each box of what’s inside and the room it’s meant to be moved into, which isn’t always the same room it’s being moved from. Put all your heavy things in smaller boxes, while packing lighter items in larger ones. When you’re packing more fragile items like plates, bowls, and glasses, put packing paper or bubble wrap around each one before wrapping them in bundles on their sides.
