Whether this is your first or your fifteenth move, there’s so many things that have to go right when you’re moving. Unfortunately, the whole process is almost never much fun, and nobody wants to draw it out longer than it has to be. One of the best ways to make sure everything goes smoothly with much less hassle, is to reduce as much stress as possible by learning how to pack everything the right way. That way you can concentrate of settling into your new digs.
Packing Clothes
Pack your hanging clothes in large trash bags hangers and all before putting them into wardrobe boxes. Leave all your other clothes in their drawers and then once the dressers are inside the moving truck, put them back in and tape them shut. This will make unpacking them a breeze when you get to the new place, because you just reverse it and simply slide them back into place once the dresser is inside.
Packing Heavy Items
One of the easiest mistakes many people make when packing boxes is filling them up too much, especially with items like books. Heavy and overloaded boxes break much more easily, so you need to make sure you are using smaller sized boxes that have been prepared for more weight with extra layers of packing tape. If you only have larger sized boxes, only fill them halfway with heavy items and fill the other half with light items such as clothing, towels, and linen.
Packing Furniture
You should always take the time to disassemble any items of furniture to ensure there is room inside the truck, while making it easier to carry through doors and hallways. Bed frames, dining tables, dresser drawers, and more can all be taken apart relatively easily for efficient packing by placing the smaller parts inside blankets or floor rugs in different parts of the truck, which will also help with the distribution of weight.
Packing Fragile Items
The best way to protect fragile items is to fill the bottom of boxes with solid non-breakable items first, before adding a few layers of soft material. You can use clothes and rags, but of packing paper and bubble wrap are made especially for this, so they will work the best. Both are pretty much essential when it comes to boxing up anything delicate. Each fragile item needs to be adequately wrapped up in bubble wrap before filling up any empty space inside boxes with packing paper. It will act as a shock-absorbing cover.
Packing The Truck
When it comes to packing everything into the truck, the heaviest stuff always goes in first, and the lightest goes in last. Whitegoods like fridges, freezers, driers, and washing machines should be loaded in, with smaller items and boxes stored in and around them to maximize the space. Follow these up with other heavy furniture like beds, mattresses, dining tables, study desks, coffee tables, and chairs, which should also have room for more boxes both underneath and on top. Then you can fill in any remaining space with the lightest boxes and items, while ensuring nothing gets stacked on top of boxes marked fragile. Finally, throw in all of your soft possessions, such as clothing, towels, and unused blankets.
As soon as everything has been moved in, you can start unpacking everything for your bedrooms and other most-used rooms. Once that’s all done, the exciting part can really begin… creating your new life in your new home.
